GM1 Pentasaccharide is a synthetic form of Ganglioside GM1, a sialic acid-containing glycolipid. Ganglioside GM1 is a component of the cell plasma membrane known to modulate cell signal transduction. Ganglioside GM1 can be a useful marker of cell types and antigens. It has been reported to spontaneously form small homogeneous vesicles without any protein templating. In response to ganglioside GM1, it has been reported that T cells from Guillain-Barrε syndrome patients produce interferon-gamma, a cytokine that is critical for the formation of adaptive immunity against bacterial or viral infections.
